Developing EPDs for a Premium Timber Windows and Doors Range

Project Scope

Following an initial discovery process, Cascade developed an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) strategy covering Sashed's principal timber window and door systems.

The programme will include seven averaged EPDs representing the company's core product range, including:

Sliding sash windows
Casement windows
Entrance doors
Bi-fold doors
Additional principal window and door systems

Each EPD will be developed in accordance with EN 17213, the Complementary Product Category Rules (c-PCR) for windows and pedestrian doorsets, using representative products to accurately reflect the wider product families.

About Sashed

Sashed is a UK supplier of premium timber windows and doors, specialising in high-quality products for residential renovation, heritage and architectural projects. Sashed commissioned Cascade to produce several window and doors EPDs across their full range.

As demand for independently verified environmental data continues to grow across the construction sector, Sashed recognised the importance of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in supporting architects, specifiers and environmentally conscious clients. The project forms part of a wider sustainability strategy designed to strengthen specification opportunities, differentiate the business and support future growth.

The Challenge

Sashed want to develop EPDs covering its complete product range.

The project presents several technical challenges. Products are manufactured using a range of timber species, glazing configurations and component options, requiring representative averages to accurately reflect production across the wider product range.

In addition, the assessment must comply with EN 17213, which standardises the dimensions used for modelling windows and doors. Representative products are first modelled using the standard reference sizes specified within the c-PCR before environmental impacts are normalised to one square metre, ensuring consistency and comparability between published EPDs.

A Consultancy-Led Approach

Cascade is working closely with Sashed during the project planning stage to develop a practical EPD strategy covering the company's full product portfolio.

Following a detailed review of the product range, representative products are being identified for each window and door family. Average life cycle assessment (LCA) models will be developed to reflect the different timber species, glazing options and material combinations used throughout production.

Cascade also prepared bespoke data collection templates and will work directly with both the UK management team and the manufacturing facility to support the collection of high-quality production data.

Throughout the project, Cascade has provided technical guidance on EPD methodology, Complementary Product Category Rules and life cycle assessment requirements, enabling the Sashed team to understand both the assessment process and the reasoning behind key modelling decisions.

Project Status

The project is currently underway, with data collection and life cycle assessment modelling in progress.

Once completed, the EPD suite will provide independently verified environmental data across Sashed's principal product range, supporting customer enquiries, architectural specification and future sustainability objectives.

The project will also establish a robust methodology that can be expanded as additional products are brought into scope, providing a strong foundation for Sashed's long-term environmental reporting strategy.
